Five volumes.115pp., 119pp., 61pp., 117pp., 132pp. Ewald was a Danish writer and journalist. During the 1880s he effectively incorporated his social Darwinist principles into three important collections of fairy tales. The public response was so favourable that he wrote another 20 volumes of fairy tales and also translated the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm in 1905. The major focus in Ewald’s fairy tales is on enlightenment, survival of the fittest, and class struggle. By the turn of the 20th century Ewald became the most significant Danish fairy-tale writer in Europe next to Hans Christian Andersen. However, in contrast to Andersen’s optimistic perspective, Ewald was much more sceptical and cynical. His tales do not exude a ‘happy-ending’ ideology, and their grim realism reflects, perhaps, the 'dis-enchantment' of the modern world.
