Item #82193 THE MEMOIRS OF DOLLY MORTON. Georges Grassal.

THE MEMOIRS OF DOLLY MORTON.

Philadelphia [Paris]: Society of Private Bibliophiles, 1904 [c.1923]. Rebound in patterned uphostery fabric over boards. A poor copy which is wanting two blank leaves at the front and one at the back. Some leaves are loose, and the rebinding is interesting by virtue of its oddity.

Item #82193

8vo. xii+278 pp. A flagellation novel set against the background of the American Civil War. It was originally published at Paris in 1899 by Charles Carrington, and the authorship usually ascribed on flimsy evidence to Georges Grassal, a late nineteenth century symbolist poet and decadent. In all major respects the edition offered here corresponds to Mendes 160 D Clandestine Erotic Fiction in English 1800 1930. A Bibliographical Study by Peter Mendes. Aldershot: Scolar Press, 1993 . The only significant difference lies in the publisher's device on the titlepage, which is similar but not identical to the one reproduced by Mendes.
