FIVE ORIGINAL PEN AND INK DRAWINGS DONE IN THE STYLE OF A TIJUANA BIBLE.
ca. 1930's. Wear along the edges to the cover and panel 1, with closed tears and slight chipping along the right side, some soiling; all five have thumbtack markings to the corners. Overall Very Good.
Item #77403
Five original pen and ink drawings: four numbered panels measuring 8.5 x 11" and what appears to be the cover illustration, measuring 9.5 x 11". A take off on the George McManus Jiggs and Maggie characters; here "Jiggs" is renamed "Giggs". Panel one begins with Maggie listening to a "romantic" radio program, "How Romantic, I Wish Giggs was that way"; panel two, Maggie reacted to Giggs’ advances and gasping in shock, "Giggs! You Brute!", as he mounts her; panel three has the static from the radio throwing Maggie off Giggs; and the last panel is a picture of Giggs in a blizzard of dishes, with his quirky ending, by saying: "I hear the angels flapping their wings now." (a standard McManus ending) All five drawings have the name "Joe Scanavino" in pen on the back. While only consisting of 4 pages, unlike an 8 page tijuana bible, these drawing are very similar in style and layout; and all are very competent in draftsmanship and execution. In our research, so far, we have not come across a hardcopy or tijuana bible that uses these images.
