The dancers perform their routines, fight off male admirers, and kill time in bars and restaurants, banally talking about men and other interests. They further amuse themselves by lounging about hotels, casually tormenting their miniature props man, Mico. Meanwhile one dancer, the lovely blonde Patricia, avoids the others during downtime, and appears to be the mute Mico’s only friend. Wistfully searching for romance, friendship, and perhaps even more, she gives the book its emotional center, and its heart.
