LE PORTIER DES CHARTREUX; Ou Memoires de Saturnin, ecrits parl lui-meme.

Amsterdam: 1877. Embossed red cloth, gilt. Unfortunately, a poor copy of a most interesting book. There are significant and clumsy tape repairs to one leaf and one hinge, and the binding is generally weak.

Item #39055

Tome Premier [ – Second]. 8vo. Two vols. 163, 167pp. [Bound up together with: "Le Bain d’amour" by ‘Le Bordelais.’ Smyrne [Amsterdam]: Athanassi & Economos [Auguste Brancart], 1892. 8vo. 60pp.] This edition of Le Portier des Chartreux, one of the most celebrated French erotic novels of the 18th century, is something of a mystery. This compiler has been unable to find mention of it in any of the usual reference books. It’s certainly old, and the fact that it’s not listed by Dutel, whose dates cover the years 1880-1920, would seem to suggest that the stated publication date of 1877 may be correct. The edition of Le Bain d’amour is the original. There is evidence that this vol. has spent some time in Germany. There are the remains of the small advertising stickers of two German booksellers, and a handwritten note in pencil, in German, on the endpaper.
